Weaver (Spider web breakdown)
Here's shot breakdown for my part in thesis which I worked with my 2 friends and the concept behind it.
As human beings cannot be isolated in society, they cannot avoid various problems that develop in their coexistence in a cooperative society. Examples of problems are any danger to their public welfare, censorship of their thought and action by someone more powerful; and being manipulated by an aggressively controlling individual who is power hungry. These unfairness, exploitation and intimidation of someone who is lesser in some way, are traits of survival instincts which both humans and animals have in common. However, with exceptional intelligence, humans created many moral and social laws for a civilized society to exist. Without these rules humans would not be any different than any predator lurking in the dark waiting to catch its prey for its own interest.
While aware of these issues, powerful people take advantage of these weaknesses, which became our inspiration to create the “Weaver” project. Intended, to arouse people’s awareness of these societal issues through an epic presentation of the true nature of society.
The visual effect short film project “Weaver” tells the story of envy, unfairness and manipulation of weaker opponents. In the end, both sides have to pay with a higher price than they expected. The story is told through the perspective of animals, for animals have uncomplicated behavior and have no rules to restrain their survival instincts. This results in a clearer view of said issues and is an interesting way to present story. I, the researcher, hope this visual effect short film project “Weaver” would cultivate good moral traits regarding fairness in our society.
I'm aware the result of spider web could be better since it doesn't move realistic enough but please give me a break, I'm still new on this field anyway. You might not realize but there are 2 types of spiders which mean the webs would be different from each other; orb type and tangled type.
The hardest part was to figure out how to construct and its system for dynamic simulation. I chose Autodesk Maya to do it for I have more experience using it more than any software. We tried using polygon first and as you can expect, it's heavy the scene so we used curve instead. The picture above is what the bigger spider web should look like; old and ragged. However, the spider need more space to move and for bees to get stuck so I have to build the newest one that was quit perfectly whole. I have to do build both webs manually with a bit help of scripting.
I setup webs with 2 main parts of controller and even rigging just in case. Next process was simulation in with actually is the combination of Cloth and Hair systems and sometime, scripting on rigging controller. I also done lighting and render the web too.
